Targeted topics of instruction to increase your skill and confidence on the water.
Hands-on courses to enhance your knowledge and skills. Each course is designed to explore an important maritime topic in detail, but connect into the other topics as well. Like individual building bricks, combining two or more topics builds a stronger foundation.
COLREGs - Rules of the Road and More
Do you REALLY know the Rules of the Road? Learn the COLREGS from a working mariner. We'll cover all the Rules of the Road, but also dive into more detail on the more nuanced rules. We will cover lights, sound signals, bridge to bridge radio communications, aids to navigation, and the lateral buoy system. In addition, the regulations regarding marine pollution.
3 to 4 Hours — Up to four people — $385
Coastal Navigation and Piloting
Yes, we have modern electronic chart plotters. However, the majority of coastal navigation and piloting isn’t about charting. Learn to plan a voyage using weather, tides, currents, coast pilots, and cruising guides. Learn to undertake that voyage using a GPS, compass, dead reckoning, and terrestrial navigation fixes. Navigate like a working mariner using AIS, light lists, local notice to mariners, ATONs, and more. And yes, we’ll use charts and plotting tools too.
10 to 12 Hours — Up to four people — $1,350
Electronic Navigation - Chart Plotters, AIS, and Radar
ECS, AIS, and radar are wonderful tools to have on our bridge, but like any tool it needs a knowledgable operator. Radar can do so much more than simply show boat pips. We’ll learn about configuring our system, understanding vectors, using radar tools, establishing collision avoidance bearings, guard sectors, understanding a CPA, automated radar plotting aids, entering harbors, navigating and piloting with radar, and more.
10-12 Hours — Up to four people — $1,350
VHF, Internet, and Global Marine Distress and Safety Systems
Are you stuck on CH 16? Did you know commercial vessels in Puget Sound VTS aren’t required to monitor 16? So, how do you communicate with them? Learn to use your VHF as part of your navigation process. Learn to use radio and satellite data communication tools. Also covered will be required licenses and registration for your carried equipment. More importantly learn about all the radio and satellite safety communication systems at your disposal, such as EPIRBs, SARTs, PLBs, Personal AIS beacons, and much more.
3 to 4 Hours — Up to four people — $385
Planning for Safety of Life at Sea
We’ll explore how to develop your own Safety Management System for your vessel. A plan to deal with emergencies and the equipment you’ll need. This course is helpful even if you never leave sight of land. We’ll cover basic fire fighting, damage control, abandon ship, what should be in your ditch bag, signaling devices, and life raft use and maintenance if applicable to your vessel.
